The emotion

Selling the farm can be an emotional decision, The farm is more than simply a place of work, its most often your livelihood and family home combined.  Often the farm has been in the family for several generations or more and it has formed the backbone of family wealth decisions.  The family attachment to the land and district it is situated in often defines their identity, it part of who you are.

All that emotion aside and with the knowledge that everything ultimately has a season,  the obligation to simply “keep going” has to be put aside.   In fact the next question often is will I do next?  What might my neighbours think about these decisions and will it be the talk in the sale yards?  The good news is they will soon be wrapping the fish & chips up, in this so called news at the sale yards and you will have moved on and taken the next chapter of opportunities.

Here’s where some good news comes in, you are not a Pioneer, you are not alone, farms have been brought and sold for years, the neighbours don’t really care, often they are in envy that you have made that decision.   The most consistent feedback is often “I wished I made the call years earlier”.   Not all retired farmers go to retirement homes, or buy motels,  many actually retire to the beach, lake or town and make up for lost time with the next generation.

As an agent, we have your best interest at heart, we understand it can be a tough and emotional time going through the process of selling a farm. We are there to work for you the vendor and use the scenario that best suits your situation, eg a long settlement, taking the farm to auction or tender. You need to trust your agent and let them do their work as a professional, it’s our job to run a successful campaign and drive genuine buyer interest locally and nationally to your farm gate.

If you are thinking of selling you should find an agent you are comfortable with, who you feel has your best interests at heart and importantly truly understands your motivation for a successful sale.  A good agent will communicate with you regularly and keep you up to date on everything you need to know not necessarily what you what to hear.  A clear transparent process earns respect and supports good decision making.

Remember when you do sell, for whatever reason, retirement, trading up/trading down or a change of direction, you realise it wasn’t that bad and life moves on in an exciting new direction.
