When we went into lock down back in August, I don’t think anyone would have thought we would still be in the situation we find ourselves currently, with it clearly going to get worse before it gets better.


Some big calls have been made across the country with the cancellation of events, no more so than the cancellation of our local A & P show. A decision, I know wasn’t made lightly by the committee and one they would have lost plenty of sleep over. Non the less the right decision was made, and let’s hope we can have a bigger and better show in 2022.


Leading into the traditional festive season and a time to reflect on the year gone by with family and friends. It may be different to what we are used to, also with thousands of kiwis trying to get home from overseas with no avail.


Where there is a negative, there is always a positive. With this latest lock down it, it has made people re-evaluate their position and what direction they want to head in. Many people in the larger centres are now thinking of making a move to the provinces. This has given increased demand for lifestyle properties in our region, there is an old saying “make hay while the sun shines”, with talk of rising interest rates, which may affect buyers decisions, this quote is bang on.


This demand is flowing through to all sectors of the rural market. There is strong demand for farms fueled by the high commodity prices currently being experienced at the farm gate coupled with the strong forestry buying bench, driving prices to new levels.


The horticulture market doesn’t seem to be slowing down with lots of demand for established orchards and land suitable for development. One factor that could affect the establishment of new greenfield developments across the country is the ongoing labour shortage. Though that is a political issue best left for another day.
